Artistic Director’s Description
This program grew out of my visit to Ainola, the home of Aino and Jean Sibelius in the Finnish countryside. What struck me most was not only the surrounding natural beauty—the quiet forests and shifting light—but the sense of creative life that filled the home itself.
Aino Sibelius anchored this world with remarkable resilience. While raising a large family and supporting Jean Sibelius through the demands of an intense artistic life, she cultivated a space where creativity could flourish. Ainola feels deeply personal and profoundly human—disciplined, imaginative, and wonderfully warm.
The repertoire traces a lineage of musical imagination across generations. Jörg Widmann—one of today’s most innovative musical voices—extends the spirit of fantasy and expressive freedom that resonates with Sibelius’ sound world. Sibelius’ “Five Pieces for Violin and Piano, Op. 81” reveals his intimate voice, both lyrical and refined.
The program culminates in Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht, written when Schoenberg and Sibelius were contemporaries who held deep mutual respect despite their vastly different styles. Inspired by Richard Dehmel’s intense poem of forgiveness and transformation, the work reflects a vision of unconditional love—an idea that echoes the enduring partnership between Aino and Jean Sibelius.
