ENCORE Chamber Music is for exceptionally creative young performers, and embodies two programs--String Quartet Intensive and Summer Academy. Students who apply for both programs will receive priority in the scholarship selection process.

The String Quartet Intensive is a program designed for pre-formed string quartets and individuals who are committed to the art of string quartet performance. This three-week program is for thirty-two exceptionally gifted young musicians ages 15-26.

  • Daily 90-minute coachings with the Cavani String Quartet, Quartet-in-Residence
  • Masterclasses and performances by renowned guest artists
  • Interpretation classes and Eurhythmics classes
  • Outreach and formal performance opportunities
  • Interactive seminars on chamber music performance: “The Art of Collaboration”, performance preparation, body works, etc.
  • Organized college visits

Students enjoy access to:

  • One designated rehearsal space per group
  • All concerts presented by ENCORE Chamber Music
  • School grounds of Gilmour Academy including the Athletic Center

Tuition: $2,300 per person (merit-based scholarship and work-study scholarship available); includes room and board


The ENCORE String Quartet Fellowship is a performance and educational program led by the Cavani String Quartet. This intensive program is intended for one exceptional string quartet that is committed to pursuing a professional concert/teaching career. The fellowship recipient group must be above the average age of 21.

  • Full tuition scholarship (includes room and board)
  • $2,000 travel stipend
  • One full recital at ENCORE Chamber Music
  • Two full outreach recitals at semi-formal performance venues in Cleveland area
  • Daily coaching with Cavani String Quartet
  • Masterclasses with guest artists of ENCORE Chamber Music

(JULY 2 - JULY 22)

The Summer Academy is for young solo violinists, violists, and cellists between ages 11-23.  The program invites students whose goals are to practice intensively, improve technique, learn to better communicate artistically, and to have public performance opportunities. The academy is designed for string players who want a challenging and thought-provoking learning experience, and is recommended for students preparing for college auditions, competitions, or concerts. Students are encouraged to pursue the highest caliber of artistic leadership.

The program includes: 

  • Daily morning technique class: how to practice scales and etudes, time management, effective practice routines, etc.
  • Daily 60-minute lesson with core faculty or teaching fellowDaily practice help with teaching fellows
  • Daily coaching with a collaborative pianist (only applicable with appropriate repertoire)
  • Daily eurhythmics class
  • All-standing chamber orchestra rehearsals and concerts with core faculty (including contemporary repertoire)
  • Performance classes with core faculty
  • Masterclasses with world-renowned guest artists and teachers
  • Outreach and formal performances
  • Seminars on body works, stage presence, competition and audition strategies, career development, etc.
  • Organized college visits
  • Outdoor activities for younger students

Students enjoy access to:

  • ENCORE Chamber Music facilities including the designated practice rooms
  • All concerts presented by ENCORE Chamber Music

Tuition: $2,950 (need-based scholarship and work-study scholarship available); includes room and board.


Collaborative Piano Fellowship is a performance and education internship program for graduate-level pianists (under 35) who are committed to a concert/teaching career in chamber music and collaborative piano. The program is designed for pianists who are looking to build repertoire, perform extensively, and to coach string players. 

In 2017, ENCORE Chamber Music will select three Collaborative Piano Fellowship Recipients. The fellowship includes:

  • Full tuition scholarship (includes room and board)
  • Daily morning meetings with program director Hyun Soo Kim
  • Weekly lessons and seminars with pianist Anita Pontremoli
  • Masterclasses with guest artists of ENCORE Chamber Music
  • Rehearses/coaches/performs with 48 string players
